Big Gigantic electrical festival faves

In one jam-packed year, EDM duo Big Gigantic played at Ultra Music Festival, Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, Lollapalooza, the Governors Ball in NYC and other fests across the country.

The list also included Rowdytown, a festival that the band itself threw at Red Rocks Amphitheater outside of Denver.

"2012 was insane," producer and saxophonist Dominic Lalli said. "It was the craziest year we've ever had."

Before the duo's show at Terminal 5 on Saturday, amNewYork spoke with Lalli about handling the festival circuit and how audiences react to Big Gigantic's genre-defying mix of electronic beats and live saxophone and drums.

What do you learn as a performer from doing so many festivals over the course of one year? It's a definitely different animal than the club show thing, mostly because you're playing for a lot more people usually. It's the best, because the more the merrier. It's amazing to play outside too. But we just try to do our thing on every night, no matter the situation.

With all of the different festival performances, you've played in front of diverse crowds, from EDM heads at Ultra to jam band fans at Bonnaroo. Does genre matter to audiences? They're so open to everything. I think that's even more evident in the younger fans. They're just getting introduced to everything, and at these festivals there [are] so many different styles. They're open to bands like us, because they're open to everything. ... Honestly, in studying all kinds of music - opera, classical, anything - it's build up and release.

Which of the festivals had the best hospitality tent? I might have to say Hangout Festival in Gulf Shores. Bonnaroo does a really good job, and so does Lollapalooza. And Ultra had a great spread.
