Bigger buses headed for some routes

Some city buses are going get a little less cramped.
The MTA will use larger buses along four of its busiest routes to make them "more efficient," officials said Monday. The buses can fit more people, but will run slightly less often.
The M60, Q44 and M34 and M34A Select Bus Service routes will get the bigger articulated buses by January 2013, officials said at Monday's transit committee hearing. The buses fit 10-15% more riders than regular ones.
The buses on those routes will also run less often, documents show. For every four smaller buses that are currently used during peak times, three larger ones will be used instead. Riders are expected to wait a minute or two longer once the changes start.
The agency said it will save $4.6 million from the switch.
