Bloomberg: Economy suffers because of immigration policies

Mayor Michael Bloomberg blasted the federal government's immigration policies Monday and backed up his retort with new data that shows the U.S. is suffering economically because of them.

Speaking at an economic expo in the city expo, the mayor released the findings of a report by the Partnership for a New American Economy.

The coalition of bipartisan mayors and business leaders found that while other nations work to have highly skilled immigrants move to their countries, the U.S. has not done enough to attract overseas talent.

"We are quickly losing our edge as other countries adopt smarter economic-driven immigration policies," Bloomberg said.

The report suggested the federal government provide more visas to science and engineering students because they are more likely to pursue related degrees and jobs than Americans.

He also called for the creation of a visa program to help foreign entrepreneurs set up shop in the U.S.
