Bloomberg says he is confident that Congress will pass gun control measures

Mayor Michael Bloomberg Sunday said he's optimistic that the federal government will make a big change in gun control rules.

Speaking on CBS's "Face the Nation"Sunday, Bloomberg, who co-chairs the Mayors Against Illegal guns alliance, said there is bipartisan support in Congress for initiatives like universal background checks and banning high capacity magazines in rifles.

"There are a lot of people that want to join in this fight and give an alternative to the NRA," he said.

Bloomberg noted that his assistance in of U.S. Senate candidate Robin Kelly's win in the Illinois Democratic primary last month demonstrated that Americans want tougher gun laws. Those who oppose such laws don't have all the facts, according to the mayor.

"It's simply a question of information," he said.

The mayor also advocated his controversial sugar drink ban that goes into effect Tuesday, reiterating that obesity is a growing health problem.

"More people will die from the effects of obesity than from starvation, and we've got to do something about this," he said.
