Just as fashion folk got settled into their new digs at Lincoln Center, it seems Mayor Michael Bloomberg might want to move Fashion Week again.
At a news conference earlier this week, the mayor expressed his desire to move the biannual event to the Hudson Yards - the massive 26-acre far-West Side project slated to open in phases beginning in 2013. Fashion Week moved to Lincoln Center in September 2010 after being housed in Bryant Park since 1993.
Bloomberg said he envisions Fashion Week "eventually" moving to Hudson Yards' "Culture Shed" - a space for art exhibitions, theater and fashion events. The Shed will be located next to a 51-story office tower, on 30th Street and 10th Avenue, slated to house New York-based retail biggie Coach's operations.
"Fashion Week has grown so much. It's outgrown Lincoln Center already. It certainly outgrew Bryant Park a long time ago," the mayor said. "The fashion industry is part of our diversification plan. We are the fashion capital of the world. It's an enormous industry that creates a lot of jobs."
