Bloomberg works on plan to extend No. 7 train into New Jersey

The city is serious about an ambitious transportation plan that many had initially dismissed as a fantasy when it was floated last year — extending the No. 7 train into New Jersey.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Wednesday he’s working on a proposal to extend the line to Secaucus. His endorsement of the plan comes a year after Gov. Chris Christie pulled the plug on a separate project to bring an extra commuter railroad service into Manhattan.

The city is already funding an extension of the train’s service from Times Square to the far West Side of Manhattan to spur growth in that area.

“We want better transportation from here to all the markets, all of the places that people live that want to come into the city to work and to shop and to have their entertainment here,” Bloomberg said at a news conference.

MTA officials said it was too early for the agency to weigh in on a possible extension, as the cash-strapped agency has enough on its plate with three mega-projects and a capital budget that’s still up in the air.

“I think that’s something for the future,” said acting MTA chief Andrew Saul.
