Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday that the symbolic World Trade Center sphere should stay put in Battery Park City - but he doesn't plan to put up a fight to keep it there.

Bloomberg acknowledged the concerns of families of 9/11 victims who are fighting the Port Authority's plan to move the Fritz Koenig Sphere to another location, saying the dented art piece that was removed from Ground Zero is "beautiful where it is."

"You have people going elsewhere to understand this is something that affected the whole city, not just on the World Trade Center Site," he said at an unrelated news conference.

The PA was originally going to move the sphere from Battery Park to a warehouse at JFK Airport but backtracked after public outcry. The agency said it is still looking for other locations.

The mayor said he would stand by whatever the PA decides to do with the sphere, despite his preference for it to stay where it is.
