A Brooklyn fire killed a 7-year-old boy yesterday morning before spreading to surrounding buildings, officials said.
Joel Smith was found unconscious in a bedroom on the bottom floor of an apartment building at 1066 Decatur Street in Bushwick, officials said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, but it was unclear exactly how he died.
Seven other people were injured in the blaze, including three children and an unidentified man who was reportedly in critical condition last night at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell.
About 130 firefighters responded to the three-alarm inferno around 1:20 a.m. and had it under control in about 90 minutes, the FDNY said.
“I heard screaming that woke me up,” Rose Sistrunk, 36, who lives in the gutted building, told the Daily News. “I grabbed my kids and ran out. There was black smoke in the hallway. It was everywhere.”
An FDNY spokesman said last night the cause of the fire was under investigation but that it did not appear to be criminal.
