Boyfriend convicted in SoHo House strangulation, drowning death
The boyfriend of a fashion designer was convicted Thursday of murdering her in a SoHo hotel room in 2010.
Nicholas Brooks, 27, faces life in prison for his second-degree murder charge when he is sentenced Aug. 26. Brooks and his girlfriend, Sylvie Cachay, 33, checked into a room at the SoHo House on Dec. 9, 2010 around 12:30 a.m.
Sometime between then and 2:10 a.m., he strangled her and drowned her in the room's bathtub. A guest one floor below called for help when they noticed water was leaking from the ceiling.
Cachay was a swimwear designer. Brooks is the son of Oscar-winning composer Joseph Brooks who committed suicide in 2011.
