Bronx church says city ordering its eviction from public room
A Bronx pastor says the city Housing Authority has ordered his small Christian church to stop holding its worship service in a housing project's community room.
The order is apparently an outgrowth of a federal court decision that allowed the city to ban religious worship in schools.
But a lawyer for the Bronx Bible Church says that decision should not apply to other public buildings.
The lawyer says he is trying to get the Housing Authority to at least delay the Dec. 31 eviction so the church can make its case.
The Housing Authority's only comment Wednesday was that the church's lease had expired and the authority is reviewing all its leases.
The church denied that there was an expiration date on its $300-a-week lease.
