Brooklyn Museum gets new forest of mushrooms

After undergoing a year of renovations, the Great Hall at the Brooklyn Museum reopens Friday — and you won’t recognize its forest of classical columns.

That’s because giant mushroom-shaped canopies now adorn the hall’s 16 25-foot columns as part of a new exhibit called “reOrder: An Architectural Environment,” designed by Dumbo-based Situ Studio.

The white canopies, all made of fabric, drape over the 10,000-square-foot colonnaded hall on the museum’s first floor, where visitors can relax on integrated seating and tabletops.

The site-specific installation wraps up Jan. 15, and this fall the rest of the space on the first floor will be redesigned, including outdoor dining and a new cafe.
