Cargo handlers at JFK stole mail, officials say
Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn on Tuesday charged three former cargo handlers at Kennedy Airport with participating in a conspiracy to steal more than $250,000 from mail arriving on international flights.
A criminal complaint said Frantz Janvier of Brooklyn, and Machel Scarlett and Tracey Sandy of Queens stole personal mail that they believed contained foreign currency, frequently yen carried on flights from Japan, and worked with three others to launder it at currency exchanges.
The arrests, prosecutors said, were the latest in a series of theft cases against airport cargo handlers that have netted 12 guilty pleas in the last three years.
