He’s now sorry.
GOP gubernatorial contender Carl Paladino sent out a public letter of apology Tuesday after a string of anti-gay remarks this week sent a barrage of criticism his way.
“I sincerely apologize for any comment that may have offended the Gay and Lesbian Community or their family members,” Paladino said in an e-mail sent out by his campaign.
Paladino, a 64-year-old Buffalo businessman and political newcomer, had said in a speech on Sunday that he doesn’t want his children “brainwashed” into thinking homosexuality is OK. The next day, he said what some marchers do in gay pride parades is “disgusting.”
Paladino said in his letter yesterday he is a “live and let live person,” but remains against gay marriage.
“If elected as your governor I will stand and fight for all gay New Yorkers’ rights,” he added.
At least one Republic pollster applauded Paladino’s change in tone, urging the candidate to refocus his message on the economy and other pressing voter issues.
“Anytime he’s not talking about those things, he’s having a bad day,” said Jim McLaughlin.
