Central Park group sells virtual green for cash
Central Park’s Great Lawn is up for sale — virtually, for now.
The Central Park Conservancy beginning Tuesday will let park goers chip in $10 to get a virtual square foot of the 400,000 square-foot Great Lawn. The money raised will go toward the park’s daily maintenance, and contributors get to design and care for their cartoony virtual plot of grass.
Among the first spots on the Great Lawn to be purchased was by actress Parker Posey, who filmed a video for the Central Park Conservancy’s fundraising effort, which is at centralparkforsale.org. “Central Park for Sale is a unique way for the park’s 40 million visitors to stay in touch with us, take a virtual piece of the park home to play with and support the Conservancy’s real-world maintenance and restoration,” said Doug Blonsky, president and CEO of the Central Park Conservancy.
