Movie Screening

"Anna May Wong: In her Own Words"
Anna May Wong was the first Chinese-American movie star. But despite her talents, Wong spent most of her career typecast as either a painted doll or a dragon lady. In the hour-long documentary “Anna May Wong: In Her Own Words,” director Yunah Hong examines the life and career of the actress, who started out in silent films when she was 17. The documentary is narrated by actress Doan Ly and features Wong’s own words, as well as excerpts from her films, archival photographs and interviews. A FREE screening of the film will take place Friday at the Asian American/Asian Research Institute, followed by a discussion with the director, who has made eight films, all with a focus on Asian-American women. RSVP by calling or emailing info@aaari.info. (Friday, 6-8 p.m., FREE, Asian American/Asian Research Institute, 25 W. 43rd St., Room 1000, 212-869-0182/0187, aaari.info)
