Crime in the city is down 33% since 2001, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on his radio address Sunday.

In addtion, murders and shootings are down 29% in 2013 compared to the same time last year.

"That great news isn't isolated to a few neighborhoods -- every borough has gotten far safer," said Bloomberg, who didn't give raw numbers during the address.

The mayor credited tougher police work and the NYPD's crackdown on illegal guns as the major factor behind the reduction.

Some of those police tactics have come into question by civil rights groups including the "stop and frisk" procedure, which critics say unnecessarily target innocent minorities.
