City celebrates Black History Month

All February long, Black History Month will speak to a people’s struggle for freedom, justice and human dignity.

“The achievements that result from our struggles are the foundation of all our celebrations,” said Howard Dodson, director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

The Black History Month Youth Film Series reflects the global black experience. 10 a.m. Feb. 14-18. 212-491-2234.

“The End of the Negro Writer: Julian Mayfield, John Henrik Clarke, and James Baldwin” is the topic of a discussion led by Professor Lawrence Jackson. 6 p.m. Monday.

A dramatic musical tribute to Langston Hughes, poet laureate of Harlem, will be held at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Feb. 26. Tickets are $16 to $20.

The Apollo Theater

Brooklyn takes the Harlem stage at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9 as the Brooklyn Arts Council hosts amateur night at the Apollo. Brooklynite MC Talib Kweli will perform and aspiring dancers, singers, rappers, comedians, spoken-word artists and performing groups will compete for your approval. Tickets are $19, $25 and $29.
