City leaders, pols to protest federal transit funding plan

Several city officials will rally against a proposal Monday that would slash federal funding for public transit.

NYC transportation commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and MTA head Joseph Lhota will join New York reps Charles Rangel and Jerrold Nadler among others to oppose Republican-sponsored transit legislation that was approved by the Ways and Means Committee Friday.

In a letter to committee chairman Rep. Dave Camp (R-Michigan) last week, Lhota voiced his “strong opposition” to the plan, saying, “Consistent on-going investment by the federal government is critical to ensure that the MTA continues to be a safe and reliable system for the long term.”

The protest is slated for 11 a.m. at Grand Central Terminal.

The proposal would end dedicated federal funding for transportation from a traditional gas tax, making a one-time $40 billion deposit into a mass transit trust fund instead.

Camp’s office did not return a call for comment Sunday.
