City offers free job training to tech newbies

The city Thursday announced a five-month web development fellowship for people without any tech experience.

The NYC Web Development Fellowship, provided by the Flatiron School, will train 50 adults and help place them in jobs. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the program will prepare people for positions in New York City's growing technology sector, which is in need of qualified talent.

"The technology sector in New York City is thriving - and hiring," Bloomberg said in a statement. The program "will help train New Yorkers for the jobs of the future, and put them to work now in New York City's thriving tech sector."

The program is open to New Yorkers at least 18 years of age who earn less than $50,000 a year or are unemployed. Applications for the program, which is valued at $12,000, can be found at flatironschool.com/nycworkforce1 or at nyc.gov. Entries are due Sept. 18 and classes begin in October in downtown Brooklyn.
