The move to allow more office space at Chelsea Market cleared an important hurdle Wednesday when the City Planning Commission unanimously approved the proposal.

Under the rezoning, submitted by the building's owner Jamestown Properties, new commercial structures would be permitted to be built atop the Ninth Avenue location. The City Council has final say on the plan and has 50 days to hold public hearings and vote on it.

Manhattan Borough president Scott Stringer and preservation groups have opposed the proposed rezoning, but City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who represents the area, hasn't commented on the plan.
