City's traffic fatalities dropped 30% since 2001

Walking the streets of the Big Apple has gotten a whole lot safer over the years.

A report issued Thursday by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Transportation Commissioner Jeanette Sadik-Khan found that traffic fatalities dropped 30% since 2001.

The mayor credited the decline in deaths and accidents with the numerous initatives he has undertaken during his tenure, such as more bike lanes, speed zones, red light cameras and enforced policing.

"Our Department of Transportation's innovative approach to sustainable development, safer streets and functional landscapes is a big part of our city's growing success," he said in a statement.

In addition to the report, the transportation department unveiled an interactive website sustainablestreets.info, which provides a map that shows the locations of the city's completed and ongoing safety initiatives.
