City unveils final prototypes for payphone revamp

The pay phone as we know it -- small, dingy, and mostly unused -- is about to change.

Mayor Bloomberg and Chief Digital Officer Rachel Haot have announced six finalists in the Reinvent Payphones Design Challenge, a competition to decide the future of the NYC payphone.

The final prototypes revamp the payphone with high-tech features including touch screens, voice command, Wi-Fi and green energy sources. You can check out the designs below, then select your favorite in the city’s online Popular Choice vote. Voting closes March 15.
