Coast Guard evacuates man from cruise ship
An elderly passenger who had to be airlifted from a trans-Atlantic cruise ship hours after it left Manhattan on Tuesday was in stable condition at a Rhode Island hospital, Coast Guard officials said Wednesday.
The man, 83, man suffered a stroke just hours after the MS Rotterdam, a Holland America Line cruise ship, left port bound for Cobh, Ireland, and Rotterdam, the Netherlands, officials said. The Coast Guard said a rescue helicopter was dispatched from Air Station Cape Cod and lifted the unidentified man in a rescue litter suspended from a cable as the ship moved 38 miles south of Shinnecock Inlet Tuesday.
A Coast Guard spokesman said it was not known if the man was a New York resident.
The Coast Guard said the man was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, where he was in stable condition.
An itinerary for the ship shows it departed New York at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday. It was scheduled to arrive in Ireland on July 19 and complete its voyage in Rotterdam on July 21.
