Con Ed to highlight repairs at Sandy-damaged E. 13th St. station

Con Edison will unveil a repaired East Village substation Monday after nearly a year of work following Superstorm Sandy.
A relay station inside the substation on East 13th Street went up in flames after an explosion during the Oct. 29 storm and caused the blackout that affected half of Manhattan for nearly a week.
Con Ed created new safeguards as part of a $400 million stormproofing investment. Newer equipment will shut down the station quickly without affecting the grid, and a stronger, taller wall protects against flooding.
A previous version of this story incorrectly stated Con Edison reopened a substation that caught fire during Superstorm Sandy. Only a relay station inside was on fire; the entire substation had been in operation since the storm.
