The New York Police Department says an officer has been shot in the arm during a confrontation with a gunman who was shot and killed.

Police say the gunfire erupted sometime around 4 p.m. Tuesday near Harlem, by a stairwell to a subway.

Police say the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, and the officer was hospitalized with at least one gunshot wound to the arm.

No one else was believed to be injured.

Police say the gunman was wanted in connection with another shooting that had occurred on Monday. In that incident, a 21-year-old woman was shot in the head in Brooklyn and is in critical condition.

It's not clear yet if a weapon has been recovered, or what touched off the shooting.
