A woman was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of stabbing her young daughter in the back of the head, police said.

The unidentified 9-year-old girl was in "critical but stable" condition at Jamaica Hospital last night, according to a police spokesman. Her mother, whom officials did not immediately identify, was also treated for an undisclosed reason. The NYPD spokesman was unsure when she would be charged.

Officials said the girl was stabbed in a home in Springfield Gardens about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters that another man in the house held the girl's mother until cops got there.
