An NYPD detective was hailed as a hero after saving a woman who nearly drowned Thursday morning when she drove her car into the Hudson River, officials said.
Emergency Services Unit Det. Darren McNamara, 37, was credited with jumping into the frigid waters at West 96th Street to rescue the 42-year-old woman, who may have been suicidal, sources said. She was not identified and was alone when she barreled her black Toyota Camry through a guardrail at about 10 a.m.
Initially, she was headed south on the Henry Hudson Parkway when she hit a vehicle, and then went the wrong way onto an on-ramp and veered into Riverside Park.
"By the time we responded, she had somehow gotten out of the car and had floated north about two blocks," FDNY Sgt. Dan Donoghue told DNAinfo.com.
McNamara dived in and carried the woman back to shore, where Det. Anthony Salvaggi pulled them out of the water, police said.
The victim "was very conscious, but very confused," Donoghue said.
