Chelsea Market's vertical expansion is closer to reality, with a few changes.

The City Council's zoning subcommittee on Thursday approved a modified plan for Jamestown Properties to expand the building on Ninth Avenue, while preserving the current masonry facade to scale with the growth of the neighborhood.

The new plan prohibits signage and allows for minor changes to the windows, without changing 75% of the current interior ground of the building, which will be preserved for food-related uses.

The plan also guarantees 150 units of affordable housing.

If passed, it would shift the market into the Special West Chelsea District.

The rezoning plan needs to be approved by the full council Oct. 30 before it goes into effect.
