A Rockland County man union leaders and police officials said is a retired NYPD detective faces a murder charge after his arrest Wednesday in connection with a fatal shooting on the George Washington Bridge investigators believe may have been the result of a road rage incident.
The NYPD identified the man in custody as Victor Romero, 62, of Haverstraw.
About 7:18 p.m. on Tuesday, police responded to a 911 call of a man shot on the outbound upper-level roadway of the bridge.
The police identified the victim as Koran Irvine, 46, of Valley Cottage, also in Rockland County. He was found unconscious and unresponsive in the driver's seat of a motor vehicle with a gunshot wound to the rear of his right shoulder, police said.
EMS personnel took him to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Detectives are looking at what, if any, role road rage may have played in the shooting, an NYPD official told Newsday late Wednesday. They were reviewing video footage that may have captured the shooting, the official said, adding that investigators were waiting for a judge to authorize a search of Romero's home.
Irvine's wife, Patricia Irvine, said the couple had two children. She said she was still processing her loss.
"He was taken from us," she told Newsday on Wednesday.
In a statement, Koran Irvine's employer, Con Edison said: "We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a member of the Con Edison family in this senseless act of violence. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who knew and loved him."
Romero joined the NYPD in 1994 and retired in 2001 on three-quarters disability pension because of injuries sustained in a 2000 on-the-job shooting in Brooklyn, the department official said.
