The NYPD said officers pulled a deceased man from the water off Atlantic Beach Monday afternoon.
Officers with the department’s 101st Precinct in Far Rockaway responded to a 911 call around 3:51 p.m. in the vicinity of Crest Road and Beach 25th Street, a spokesperson told Newsday.
When police arrived at the scene, they found "an unidentified male unconscious and unresponsive in the water," the spokesperson said.
The police department’s Harbor Unit, which handles marine search and rescue duties, retrieved the man from the water before he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The Office of Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York will determine the man’s cause of death, according to the NYPD spokesperson. An investigation into his death remains ongoing. Police are withholding the man’s identity until the department can notify his family.
