NYPD officers shot and wounded a man Tuesday evening in Brooklyn shortly after he had allegedly been involved in a gunfight with an assailant who fled, a department assistant chief said.
About 7:30 p.m., two officers in a patrol car heard gunshots near Ocean and Church avenues in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. They soon saw two men allegedly involved in a shootout, said NYPD Assistant Chief Frank Giordano at a news conference late Tuesday.
Officers fired at the alleged gunman closest to them, hitting him at least once, Giordano said.
Edynesson Bauduy, 22, of Brooklyn, who is on parole after serving time for a shooting and a robbery, was taken into custody and transferred by ambulance to Kings County Hospital in stable condition, Giordano said.
Information on charges facing Bauduy was not immediately available.
"Tonight our officers ran toward gunfire and they bravely and immediately confronted a dangerous situation," Giordano said.
Police recovered a 9 mm handgun. The other alleged shooter fled the scene, Giordano said.
The shooting was captured on the officers' body cameras, he said. It is being investigated by the NYPD Force Investigation Division.
"Tonight our officers ran toward gunfire and they bravely and immediately confronted a dangerous situation," Giordano said.
The officers were taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Bauduy is on parole until 2030 from a previous conviction related to a shooting and an armed robbery when he was 18, according to the assistant chief. Bauduy pleaded guilty to both offenses, received concurrent sentences and was released on parole June 10, Giordano said.
