The late-night shootings of two teenage girls just steps from Greenwich Village's historic Stonewall Inn, and amid the revelry after the NYC Pride March, was a "devastating" end to an otherwise celebratory day, Mayor Eric Adams said.
Police responded to multiple 911 calls of gunshots ringing out about 10:15 p.m. Sunday on Sheridan Square at West Fourth Street. There, police found the two teens wounded among a chaotic scene, according to the NYPD.
A 16-year-old girl had been shot in the head; she was taken to Bellevue Hospital where she was listed in critical condition, police said.
A 17-year-old girl was shot in the leg. She was taken to Northwell Greenwich Village Hospital in stable condition, police said.
The identities of the victims were not available.
A firearm was recovered at the scene, police told Newsday.
Police said the shooting erupted as a result of a dispute, but could not provide a specific motive or say whether it was in any way related to the NYC Pride celebrations.
"Saddened to learn about the shooting by the Stonewall Inn tonight as Pride celebrations were winding down," Adams said in a statement issued late Sunday. "During a time when our city should be rejoicing and celebrating members of our diverse LGBTQ+ community, incidents like this are devastating."
The Stonewall Inn, about a block away from the shooting, is a National Historic Landmark and the scene of a 1969 riot that launched the gay rights movement. The city's annual gay pride parade began the next year with several thousand participants.
On Sunday, parade organizers Heritage of Pride said an estimated 2.5 million people were in attendance as spectators, marchers and attendees at the events, on par with recent years.
