New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is taking a lucrative, one-day victory lap to California where he is being celebrated as a hero for legalizing gay marriage in New York.

He is scheduled to attend a political fundraiser in Los Angeles on Friday that includes singer-actress Vanessa Williams, director Rob Reiner, and J.J. Abrams who directed the summer action film "Super 8."

The fundraiser will be at the home of a White House decorator and HBO executive.

Cuomo and legislators including four critical Senate Republicans have already received substantial campaign donations from gay marriage advocates in New York.

A legal challenge to the law hinges on whether Cuomo conducted illegal closed meetings to court Republicans. But state open government Executive Director Robert Freeman says that's a "long shot" argument.
