Gov. Andrew Cuomo is expected to meet with a group of gay rights supporters Wednesday in Albany to discuss strategies for legalizing same-sex marriage in New York, according to one of the attendees.

Cuomo has said he wants to submit a marriage equality bill this year, and possibly as soon as June.

GOP Senate Leader Dean Skelos said last fall that he opposes gay marriage, but wouldn’t stop lawmakers from voting on such a bill. It's unclear whether Cuomo will be able to enlist the support of Republicans, who control the Senate. Gay advocacy groups say he'll need to have at least six of them on board.

Previous legislation was defeated in the Senate in 2009.

The governor’s office did not return a call for comment.
