Customs agents checking an unclaimed bag at Kennedy Airport last week came upon four pairs of suspiciously heavy sneakers.

"A more intrusive exam of the sneakers produced a white powdery substance, which field-tested positive for cocaine," the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency said Monday.

Agents found nearly five pounds of cocaine with a street value of $107,000 concealed in the soles, the agency said. The abandoned bag, which came from the Dominican Republic, was searched last Thursday, the agency said.

"CBP officers in the New York area remain vigilant in their efforts to combat the illicit trade of narcotics," Robert E. Perez, head of the agency's regional office, said in a statement.
