New York City's public advocate is accusing Mayor Michael Bloomberg of misleading the public about the resignation of a deputy mayor who stepped down after a domestic violence arrest.

Public Advocate Bill de Blasio contends in a letter Friday that the mayor decided "to mislead the public and key figures" of his administration.

De Blasio says he will introduce legislation that would require the out-of-town arrest of any city official to be reported to city authorities.

The mayor's office said it had no comment.

Stephen Goldsmith was arrested July 30 in Washington, D.C. A police report asserts he shoved and grabbed his wife. Goldsmith and his wife dispute the account; prosecutors are not pursuing charges.

A few days later, Goldsmith and the mayor said he was leaving his position after being approached about private-sector opportunities. -- AP
