Delancey Street gets safety makeover near Williamsburg Bridge

Crossing the street at the base of the Williamsburg Bridge might nolonger a walk on the dangerous side.
The Department of Transportation introduced changes Thursday to Delancey Street between the bridge and the Bowery streets that are aimed to cut down on the number of injuries and deaths.
Car lanes along the street are better marked, more pedestrian space has been added at corners, crosswalks have been shorted and pedestrian walk signs now have countdown clocks.
"Crossing Delancey should not be for the brave of heart," Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan said.
There have been 118 pedestrian injuries and six deaths during the last six years along that section of the street, according to the DOT.
