More high school seniors might be making the grade, but they’re not ready for the next step.

State education officials said Tuesday that 61 percent of students in their senior year in the city received diplomas in 2010, up 2 percentage points from 2009. However, just 21 percent of those grads had high enough scores on their English or math Regents exams to show they were actually prepared for higher education or a job.

Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch said in a statement that the startling numbers show educators have “tremendous work to do,” including reversing a widening achievement gap between minority and white students.

The city, meanwhile, released graduation numbers based on its own calculation that show the rate in 2010 was 65 percent, up from 47.5 percent in 2005.

“There is no percent under 100 percent that we are satisfied with,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a news conference.
