William Masso, a veteran NYPD officer, pleaded guilty Monday in his involvement with an illegal gun-smuggling ring that city officials decried as a "deplorable betrayal" of the public trust.
Masso, a 48-year-old Brooklyn cop, pleaded guilty to four counts of conspiracy following his arrest in October for allegedly helping to smuggle 20 firearms for cash, prosecutors said.
Eleven other people, including seven NYPD cops, were also charged as a result of the two-year FBI sting. Masso faces up to six years behind bars at his June 15 sentencing.
He "brought dishonor and disrepute to his fellow officers and was willing to endanger others for his own personal gain," Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement.
