Djokovic wins French opener
Top-seeded Novak Djokovic battled through a six-hour rain delay and came from behind in the third set of his first-round matchup in the French Open to defeat Belgium native David Goffin, 7-6 (5), 6-4, 7-5, Tuesday.
Djokovic's next match will be against Argentine Guido Pella, who is currently ranked No. 83 in the world. Pella advanced to the second round after defeating Ivan Dodig in five sets.
"It was a good match. I hope you enjoyed it," Djokovic said in an on-court interview after the match. "It was not easy, because David is a good player with a lot of talent and a lot of aggressiveness on the court."
For Djokovic, who said before the tournament that winning the French Open was his ultimate goal for the 2013 season, he remains on a collision course with rivals Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the semifinals and finals, respectively.
In other top 10 action, ninth-ranked Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland defeated Frenchman Thiemo de Bakker in four sets. On the women's side, No. 9 Samantha Stosur, of Australia, advanced to the second round after cruising, 6-0, 6-2, against Kimiko Date-Krumm, of Japan.
