A man driving the wrong way on the FDR caused a deadly three-car pileup early Sunday morning, officials said.
The unidentified 26-year-old man was driving a Nissan Maxima northbound on the southbound side of the road just before 3 a.m. Sunday when he slammed head-on into a Dodge Caravan driven by a 52-year-old man near the Houston Street exit, police said. A 22-year-old woman driving a Mazda then smashed into the Caravan.
The drivers of the Nissan and Dodge were pronounced dead at the scene by EMS, officials said. The woman in the Mazda and a male passenger in her car were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where they were in stable condition Sunday.
Police were withholding the identities of the deceased drivers Sunday, pending family notification. They said they were still investigating how the 26-year-old ended up on the wrong side of the road, and were unsure if any of the drivers had been drinking.
