Authorities say a drowning fisherman who fell off a New York City pier was saved by a fellow angler who snagged his clothing with a fishing hook, holding him steady until emergency workers arrived.

Fire and police officials say the unidentified fisherman toppled off the Canarsie Pier in Brooklyn into the Jamaica Bay at about 12:45 p.m. Saturday. They say an astute angler immediately cast a line, hooked him and kept his head above water.

They say firefighters arrived about seven minutes later, jumping into the water to rescue the fisherman, who had turned blue after taking on water.

They say he was brought onto a nearby police boat where officers and firefighters resuscitated him. He was then taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he's expected to recover.
