Being an emergency medical technician isn't easy.

You're working in an ambulance swerving through traffic -- trying to keep a heart patient alive or staunch the bleeding from a gunshot victim. While heroic cops and firefighters often get their props on the public stage, EMTs aren't as visible. But Brendon Hernandez, 25, became an exception this week after wrestling a gun away from a disturbed person who, authorities say, shot a police officer in Harlem. Posing for pictures later with Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, Hernandez said he has taken the test to join the NYPD. Wish him the best. He has the right stuff -- and his reference list just got way better.
