The relentless beats that come from the speakers of any device playing "Out of the Black," the new album by German EDM artist Boys Noize, seem a universe away from those associated with Feist or the Black Eyed Peas.
Noize, a DJ and producer, might be best known for his reworkings of favorites from the aforementioned artists as well as tracks by Michael Jackson and more.
amNY caught up with him.
What got you interested in working with so many different types of artists? I look at myself as a musician and I like to surprise myself. A lot [of the collaborations] are based on friends or fans. I'm just interested in working with inspiring people. There's a part of me that loves all kinds of music.
Where do you start when remixing a song? I'm very picky with the songs that I remix. Most of the time I like to take the vocal and create new music around it. My favorite remixes are the ones that present the song in a new way, where you get the idea of the original.
Your new album has a harder, sharper edge than a lot of the electronic dance music on the top 40. Was there a conscious decision to avoid the current trends? When I'm playing in clubs, 99% [of the time] it's not the bottle service crowd. ... I like concerts with people drinking beer and throwing it around.
