Eight out-of-control women were arrested on gang assault charges early Sunday morning after allegedly stabbing a 63-year-old straphanger on a Manhattan subway.
The unidentified man was attacked after asking the group of girls to calm down as they rode a downtown No. 6 train at about 6:15 a.m., according to police.
"He asked them to quiet down because they were being obnoxious," a police source said. Instead of lowering their voices, one of the rowdy women pulled out a knife and plunged it into the man's left shoulder.
Cops arrested the eight women at the 23rd Street station and recovered a knife at the scene, the NYPD said. Police identified seven of the eight women, who are between 17 and 20 years old. In addition to gang assault, they face menacing and riot charges.
The man, who alerted MTA workers about the attack at the next stop, was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was in stable condition, cops said.
Regular train service resumed by 7:30 a.m., according to an MTA spokeswoman.
Felony subway assaults last month were up by 57% when compared to last June, police statistics show, though there has been an 11% drop in subway assaults so far this year.
