Enterprise finally set to arrive at New York's Intrepid museum

After nearly a week of delays, the space shuttle Enterprise will arrive at Kennedy Airport on Friday afternoon to begin its permanent residence in the city.
The Enterprise, which was built in the mid-1970s as a prototype for NASA's shuttle program, will spend a short while at the airport as its undocked from the 747 jet it will fly in on. It will then be barged up the Hudson River to its home at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.
The shuttle has been on display at the Smithsonian's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington's Dulles International Airport for the past decade, but a few years ago, NASA put out a request for proposals from institutions to take ownership of the vehicle. After putting enormous effort into its bid, the Intrepid museum won the storied shuttle, the museum told amNewYork.
The Enterprise exhibit will open sometime during the summer under a semi-permanent, air-supported bubble, and in a few years it will be moved to its permanent home inside a building directly next to the museum.

-- When: Scheduled to leave D.C. between 9:30 and 11 a.m.; flight time is about an hour
-- Where: The shuttle will fly over the Hudson River, the Statue of Liberty and the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum
-- Good spots to watch: Anywhere along the Hudson river or the southern tip of Manhattan
