Rally remembers Eric Garner on 1st anniversary of his apparent chokehold death by NYPD

Eric Garner was remembered Friday by several dozen demonstrators on the first anniversary of his apparent chokehold killing by an NYPD officer during an arrest for allegedly selling loose cigarettes.

Garner died after Officer Daniel Pantaleo held him by the neck, sparking a wave of nationwide protests against police brutality.

"The people are tired. It's getting to the point where they don't see a difference so they don't come out" to demonstrate, said Cynthia Turnquest, of Westchester, who teaches in the Bronx, at Friday's rally.

"How does selling loose cigarettes end up" in a man's death?" she said.

Shawn Parker, 31, of Brooklyn, gave protesters a passing glance as he entered the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in lower Manhattan. "I really don't see this making a difference," Parker said, as people chanted "indict, convict, send those killer cops to jail."

Demonstrators took the ferry to Staten Island and marched to the spot on Bay Street where Garner died on July 17, 2014.

"One year ago we heard Eric Garner's last words, 'I can't breathe,' and still we have no justice," said Travis Morales, who led the march organized by Stop Mass Incarceration, a group that protests police brutality and the unjust incarceration of blacks and Latinos.

Earlier this week, Garner's family settled its legal case against the city for $5.9 million. Several marches will take place this weekend, including Saturday at the federal courthouse in Brooklyn. Organized by the Rev. Al Sharpton, demonstrators will demand a federal investigation into Garner's death.
