New York’s former city comptroller William Thompson has been fined more than $600,000 for illegally posting signs on public property during his failed mayoral campaign.

The city Environmental Control Board found that Thompson’s 2009 campaign posted more than 8,000 illegal signs.

His lawyer, Jerry Goldfeder, said Thompson will appeal.

The ECB says Thompson was responsible for telling his campaign to follow the law.

Goldfeder says Thompson told his staff “verbally and in writing” not to post signs on public property.
