The fact that the line to enter Chris Benz’ presentation Monday at the David Rubinstein atrium literally wrapped around Columbus Avenue is a testament to the young designer’s broad appeal. Once inside, we slipped into a state of sartorial rapture, coveting nearly every piece of the strong, smartly styled collection, making it one of our favorites so far this week.
The designer — a mentor at the Savannah College of Art and Design — cited his time in Georgia as an inspiration, and it showed in the large-brimmed hats and ladylike clothing that had an almost antique appeal reminiscent of the Old South.
The beauty of it all, however, lay in the fact that nothing looked costume-y — every item had a current, personal-style sensibility that any modern girl would be thrilled to wear. Between silky, floor-grazing dresses, wide-legged trousers paired with cropped jackets and girly blouses and a variety of coats trimmed in fur, Chris Benz absolutely earned a spot in our fall closet.
