In his show notes, Derek Lam said he used “new combinations to make clothes look fresh, fluid, weightless, yet also appropriate for the fall/winter season.” Translation: chic evening gowns with leather bodices, the backs of heavier pieces made out of slippery materials.

Perhaps most interesting was the lighter-looking outerwear in coat-weight cotton. To make them winter-appropriate, Lam used button-out linings in sherpa jersey or waxed fur, and collars and trims in cashmere.

The designer’s signature furs also graced the catwalk — the coats and vests could keep even the coldest New Yorker warm, yet didn’t feel as though they’d weigh the wearer down with masses of material or dark color.
